AVR32Atmel® Corporation announced today the AT32AP7001, a member of the AVR®32 AP7 family of Application Processors optimized for cost constrained, Linux®-based embedded designs. The device is packaged in a 30 x 30mm VQFP for easy integration into a four-layer PCB design.

Linux powers Sony's new Mylo WiFi handheld

MyloIn September, Sony expects to ship a Linux- and Qtopia-based handheld device featuring WiFi connectivity, an Opera web browser, and a variety of text- and voice-messaging clients and media players. The Mylo -- short for "My Life Online" -- will be available in black or white, priced at $350.

NTFS-3G - Full NTFS read / write support for Linux

The ntfs-3g driver is an open source, GPL licensed, third generation Linux NTFS driver for 32-bit, little-endian architectures which was implemented by the Linux-NTFS project. It provides full read-write access to NTFS, excluding access to encrypted files, writing compressed files, changing file ownership, access right.

PHS smartphone to go on sale in August

Japanese mobile firm Willcom is developing a Linux-based modular smartphone for sale in Japan starting in August.

The new phone is based on the W-SIM module standard, which combines antenna, wireless transceiver and SIM card functions in a removable module. The W-SIM Linux phone will be based around a 416MHz Intel embedded CPU and features a 1.3-megapixel camera, according to Jan Kucynski, a research analyst with the Wireless World Forum.

Nokia 770 Tablet OS 2006 Released

Nokia 770Following a beta release on June 9, Nokia has released a highly anticipated Linux operating system update for the 770 Internet Tablet. The Tablet OS 2006 update is now available for download by 770 owners on Nokia's website. The Tablet OS 2006 upgrade apparently completely wipes out all Tablet OS 2005 applications. Specifically, the Nokia 770 upgrade page states, "Installed applications designed for OS 2005 will not be compatible with OS 2006 edition and will not be restored even from backup."
